Health, Should I try the Shou wu wan (polygonum multiflorum) hair regrowth product?

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

Shou wu wan (which is also sold under the HairVive trademark) is a commercially prepared product based on the ingredient known as He Shou Wu (which in Chinese translates to “Mr. He Hair Black”). Shou wu wan is an herbal remedy mainly used for hair regrowth purposes which was supposed to have been used by a man named Mr. He who benefitted greatly from using this herbal hair regrowth product. By using the Shou wu wan herbal product, Mr. He was reputed to have become youthful looking again (because as any balding man knows, hair loss can make one look much older than one actually is.) Shou wu wan works by being absorbed into the kidneys and the liver – from there, these vital organs can then work to provide nourishment to specific parts of the body. The kidneys are said to use the Shou wu wan ingredients to provide nutrients to the bones, and bone marrow, replenish a decreasing semen count, stop graying of the hair on your head, and basically control aging of men. The liver, on the other hand, can employ the Shou wu wan ingredients to provide nourishment to your head area, particularly the hair itself. Other side benefits from using the Shou wu wan are to combat senility and extend the male lifespan. However, one source does claim that the Shou wu wan has been linked to some cases of liver dysfunction so you need to be cautious as well about using the Shou wu wan product. These liver dysfunction cases are deemed rare instances when male consumers react to the Shou wu wan ingredients so you might want to place yourself under the care of a good doctor while under Shou wu wan treatment. Hair loss is also known by the medical term alopecia. Sixty percent of those who used the Shou wu wan are said to have regained hair growth three months after they used the Shou wu wan product (based on clinical testing results.) Animal test subjects (specifically aging mice) displayed lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, lesser degree of pathological changes in their brains, and advanced memory and learning patterns after being treated with the Shou wu wan product. The efficacy of the main ingredient He Shou Wu is said to be greatly enhanced by the presence of 12 additional herbs in the same product formulation. The manufacturer opted to include these 12 herbs because He Shou Wu reportedly has less than optimal results when used on its own. The HairVive trademarked formulation of Shou wu wan is said to contain an enhanced formulation of the conventional Shou wu wan product, is manufactured in the US by ActiveHerbs, and is said to be much more potent and stronger than other Shou wu wan formulations. Basically, the Shou wu wan comes in the form of pills that balding men have to consume every day. The number of pills you have to take depends on which brand of Shou wu wan you will be patronizing, but generally you will be asked to consume the full prescribed dosage for the initial three months of treatment – after which, you can then cut down on the dosage. Health, New Merck Vaccine Produces Serious Bowel Problems for Infants

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

According to a Reuters report, the Food and Drug Administration stated that it would be notifying consumers and health care providers alerting them to some 28 cases where infants suffered serious bowel conditions after receiving Merck’s new vaccine to protect against rotavirus. The report from Reuters said, “The FDA said it was not immediately clear how many of the 28 reported cases were caused by the vaccine. It said the condition, known as intussusception, can occur in the absence of vaccination.” The FDA said at least 3.5 million doses of Merck’s vaccine have already been delivered in the United States since its release in February of 2006. The FDA said that the 28 cases filed with the agency is not enough to recall the vaccine, but they have issued a warning and are waiting to hear of any further cases to be reported. Intussusception is the intestines get blocked or twisted, resulting in one portion to telescope into another portion causing intestinal blockage. This causes very strong abdominal pain and if not treated with the first 24 hours, can cause permanent damage to the abdominal tissue or even death. Dr. Michelle Goveia told Reuters, “it would be difficult to determine how many, if any, of the 28 cases of intussusception reported under the surveillance system were due to the Merck vaccine. But she speculated most were naturally occurring cases, given the product’s safety in the large clinical trials.” For more information on ordering from online foreign pharmacies.

Health, Being The First-Born: The Burden Hardest To Bear

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

Society and culture can often place extreme burdens on the first-born child in a family. Being the eldest child in the family often entails additional responsibilities, expectations, and demands. Different cultures exhibit this tendency in varying degrees, though the added pressure and importance of the first-born has sometimes been seen as a universal trait. However, given the right psychological conditions, a first-born child can mentally collapse under such responsibilities, with effects ranging from developing an anxiety disorder to severe case of performance anxiety. Parents from different countries and cultures usually expect the first-born child to be the one to carry on the family name, as well as help maintain the family’s reputation. In the modern environment, this tends to include the expectation of performing well in the academic, personal, and professional realm. Children are oftentimes expected to perform as well if not exceed the performance and achievements of their parents. In some lower class families, the expectation also includes bringing in the extra money needed by the family for its daily survival. The eldest son or daughter is also expected to help with the bills in the house as well to send the younger siblings to school. These pressures generate resentment, frustration, and a deeply-rooted sense of status anxiety and social anxiety. For first-born children in the higher classes of a particular society, the more prevalent problem is a combination of status anxiety and performance anxiety. The problem here stems not from the desire to better one’s status, but to maintain the current status and preserve the family’s collective social reputation. As such, first-born children are groomed to either be mirror images of their parents, or a reflection of the hopes and dreams the parents had when the child was born. The personal identity becomes blurred with concepts such as filial duty and social status, essentially fostering an individuality only when it is in accordance with social and familial values and demands. While they have little concern over social anxiety, the psychological need to maintain the family’s position often results in a form of performance anxiety, as the performance of the child is inevitably compared to anything and everything possible. In some cases, the child is compared to his parents, though parents are more likely to compare the child to his peers. For members of royalty or long, noble bloodlines, there is an even greater pressure. Those who are from so-called noble or aristocratic families sometimes grow up with a social anxiety that drives them to live up to the reputation of their forebears. People with famous ancestors also feel the pressure of having the same achievements as those of their well-known predecessors. The problem comes when people inevitably compare the ancestor to the descendant; a comparison that typically shows favor towards the ancestor. This can sometimes cause a child to feel performance anxiety, rendering them unable or unwilling to even attempt to achieve anything on their own, fearing the “unfair” comparisons that they expect to come. All of these demands and pressures can sometimes come together to “snap” the first-born and make them lash out in a variety of ways. Some reject the responsibilities altogether and actively endeavor to be the exact opposite of what is expected of them. Others develop an anxiety disorder that effectively cripples their ability to fulfill their duties, despite their willingness to do so. A few decide to isolate themselves not only from society, but from their own families. In some instances, people have observed that the first-born exhibits what can only be described as a fear of success, resulting from the inability to cope with the high expectation that he was raised with and has blown out of proportion. In rare cases, the pressure builds to the point that the only way to relieve it is to embrace —- madness. Resource Box: DrugstoreTM.com is a reputable online drug store. Health, When You’re On A Difficult Note With Your Mommy

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

For many people, Tori Spelling ought to be first on the list of Hollywood children who had a fairytale childhood. But this is far from the truth. In a recent tell-all with ABC Tori related that her relationship with her mom had been far from perfect. The daughter of a successful Hollywood producer, Aaron Spelling (Starsky & Hutch, Charlie’s Angels, etc.) and a former model, Candy Spelling, 34-year-old Spelling confessed feeling deprived of the unconditional love she felt she was entitled to from her mother. A wiser Tori however hopes to avoid getting into the same problem with her own daughter whom she is pregnant with. She is positively glowing in her role as pregnant mom and says, “I love my growing belly and the curves I’m taking on.” Well, here’s one mom who won’t be having a mommy makeover in Los Angeles in a hurry. However, she did have a breast augmentation Los Angeles when she was in her early twenties. But if she hasn’t had a follow up breast lift surgery in Los Angeles as yet, I have a feeling that it might not be long before Tori changes her mind. After pregnancy, the body tissues that were tightened at an early date tend to lose their elasticity. Many women thus opt for a mommy makeover procedures package after they have given birth to get over this problem. A breast lift surgery can put the perk back in breasts that have become flaccid after the baby has been weaned. A tummy tuck in Los Angeles can re-firm stomach muscles that have been distended during delivery. The options are many. Visit the Plastic Surgery Institute of California to know about the ones you have. This article is by PSI_mommymakeover, who is a freelance writer. He is well read on cosmetic surgery. Health, The Benefits of Whey Protein Concentrate

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

Whey protein concentrate popularity has increased dramatically in recent years because of advances in processing technology. Whey protein begins as a watery byproduct of cheese manufacturing. In its crude state, whey is about 93% water, 6.5% lactose, 0.9% protein and 0.2% vitamins, minerals, and fat-soluble nutrients. In this form, whey is not of much benefit to athletes, but with gentle low-temperature processing and filtration, this liquid can be stripped of most of its lactose, fat, cholesterol and water to yield concentrated whey powders containing anywhere from 34 to 89% protein. Because whey protein concentrate is produced from a liquid as a byproduct of the cheese manufacturing process, it needs to be processed to turn it into anything useable. This process, the boiling and mixing and removing of the non-essential ingredients, is a complicated, painstaking process that takes the liquid from its original form into the final product. The USDA has many requirements for the production of dry whey protein concentrate. According to their report published in 2003, all manufacturers must adhere to the following guidelines. All plants are to be regularly inspected by the government to insure the safety and cleanliness of the facility. The finished product shall not contain less than 25% or more than 89.9% protein, shall not contain more than 10% milk fat or 5% moisture, and shall not have a ph-factor exceeding 7.0. The guidelines continue to the appearance and even the flavor of the finished product. Somebody is taking the production of whey protein concentrate very seriously. Whey protein concentrates are produced from liquid whey by clarification, ultra-filtration, dia-filtration and drying techniques. The resulting product contains all of the essential amino acids, both long and short chain, not produced by the body, are quickly and easily digestible without the aids of additional protein enzymes and provide the body with an unlimited supply of everything it needs to fight off diseases and live for a long time.Whey Protein Facts provides detailed information on Whey Protein, Whey Protein Facts, Benefits of Whey Protein, Whey Protein Powder and more. Health, EXPERT HEALTH & NUTRITION BLOGGERS CONCERNED ABOUT FRITO-LAY’S ATTEMPT TO LABEL THEIR PRODUCT “HEAL

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

There has been a startling amount of debate in health and nutrition-related blogs surrounding a recent acknowledgment by America’s Food & Drug Administration that certain Frito-Lay products will begin carrying “Heart Healthy” labels. The FDA agreed that Frito-Lay is in compliance with new regulations equating limitations on saturated fats to being “Heart Healthy.” However, a number of widely acclaimed blogs have complained that Frito-Lay’s assortment of salted snacks are not in any way healthy and that the “Heart Healthy” label is misleading, especially to children.

Disease Proof, a nutrition blog focused on illness prevention, titled a recent post “Frito-Lay has gone insane.” They claim Frito-Lay is a maker of “uber junk food” and bluntly comments “Sure, we’ve got an obesity epidemic, but, insanity might be just as far-reaching.” In sharp contrast, Disease Proof’s latest post provides detail on a tough set of new standards laid out by the European Union concerning food labeling and advertising.

The Cardio Blog expressed concern, opining that “Frito-Lay products are going to be carrying heart-healthy labels touting the benefits of unsaturated fats. Although it’s true that unsaturated fats are much healthier than saturated ones, this seems like just another desperate attempt for generally bad-for-you products to get in on the trend towards more health-conscious foods.” Their latest post also makes mention that the FDA requires Frito-Lay to insert additional fine print onto the label. According to Cardio Blog, it reads as such, “Replacing saturated fat with similar amounts of unsaturated fats may reduce the risk of heart disease. To achieve this benefit, total daily calories should not increase.”

As usual, readers can could count on Diet Blog to offer their unique take on the matter. Their blog, whose tagline reads “Dieting & Weightloss, no more big fat lies” was similarly concerned that a “Heart Healthy” label would confuse consumers into thinking these products were actually good for them. Their latest post on the Frito-Lay uproar claimed that “…the trouble with such health claims is that a single nutrient is taken out of context. A product that is mostly refined grains, added sugars and vegetable oil is hardly a healthy product.”

Diet Blog also provided some further detail on which products, specifically, would be able to carry the “Heart Healthy” label. “Essentially, any of the following oil-containing Frito-Lay foods may have the claim: crackers, salad dressings, salads, sauces and dips, and grain, vegetable and fruit-based snacks. Unsaturated fats must make up 80 percent or more of total fat.”

It has become increasingly difficult to sort fact from fiction in the world of health and nutrition. Turning to the blogosphere is a great way to assist yourself in making smart choices for life and your lifestyle.

Health, Antidepressants

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

In 2002, 8.5 percent of the US civilian noninstitutionalized population had purchased at least one prescription Antidepressant. The currently available classes of Antidepressants include monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), novel Antidepressants, and tetracyclic Antidepressants. MAOIs act by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, a complex enzyme system that metabolizes excess serotonin and epinephrine. It holds the potential of inducing potential life-threatening problems, and therefore cannot be used in patients with congestive cardiac failure or in those with a history of liver disease. It is dangerous to those who are hypersensitive to its ingredients. The important drugs of this class include isocarboxazid (Marplan), moclobemide (Aurorix, Manerix, Moclodura), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), levo-deprenyl (Selegiline, Eldepryl), and harmala. Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) act mainly by inhibiting the reuptake of both norepinephrine and serotonin. Though the type of side effects experienced by the patient due to TCAs or MAOIs are many times similar, the frequency of these side effects is much less in the case of TCAs. Thus, TCAs enjoy a better rate of acceptance by the patients. The TCAs of interest in the treatment of depression include amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep, Tryptanol), amoxapine (Asendin, Asendis, Defanyl, Demolox, Moxadil), clomipramine (Anafranil) desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane), dothiepin hydrochloride (Thaden, Prothiaden), doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan), imipamine (Tofranil), Iofepramine (Lomont, Gamanil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), and triimipramine (Surmontil). The SSRIs act by inhibiting the serotonin reuptake, and are considered the most popular, effective and safe prescription medications. The SSRIs used to treat depression include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Prozac Weekly, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR), and sertraline (Zoloft). Prozac, a drug of this class, has shown significant success in the treatment of depression and prevention of suicide. It exhibits less potential side effects as compared to TCAs and MAOIs, and is well tolerated. The currently available SNRIs (desipramine, duloxetine, nefazodone, and venlafaxine) keep both serotonin and norepinephrine at the right level to alleviate depressive symptoms. Nefazodone alleviates anxiety, causes some sedation and positively affects sleep. Venlafaxine (Effexor) has significant anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary hesitancy, and constipation), induces sedation and has potential withdrawal effects. The drug bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR) is the most commonly used member of the novel Antidepressant class. It is unique in its efficiency to inhibit the reuptake of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Maprotiline (Ludiomil) and mirtazapine (Remeron) are the two main drugs from the group of tetracyclic Antidepressant. Mirtazapine acts by increasing the amount of noradrenaline and serotonin, and is of benefit in particular for the treatment of depression accompanied with anxiety, agitation and /or sleep disturbances. The natural Antidepressants that impress their effectiveness on experts include St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), SAM-e (S-adenosyl-L-methionine), and 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). Other natural Antidepressants that are in need of research-based studies to prove their efficacy, safety and usability in the treatment of depression include herbs (Ginseng and Ginko), amino acids (l-tyrosine and phenylalanine), and certain nutrients, including B vitamins.Tricyclic Antidepressants provides detailed information on antidepressants, antidepressant comparisons, antidepressant medications, antidepressant side effects and more. Tricyclic Antidepressants is affiliated with Symptoms Of Schizophrenia.

Health, How To Deal With Dandruff - Know the facts

October 25th, 2008 10:18 am

Dandruff is a mysterious ailment. Dandruff is unlikely to be the cause of hair loss. Dandruff can happen at any age but is most commonly found in people between the ages of 12 and 80. Dandruff is the result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp. Shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp at an excessive rate, is the result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp. Dandruff is an itchy, annoying and persistent skin disorder of the scalp. A dark shirt and dandruff just simply don’t go together! There is nothing more embarrassing than to have someone brush white flakes off your new black sweater or denim jacket. Dandruff is a global phenomenon and many people find that dandruff can cause social or self-esteem problems. Common older literature cites the fungus Malassezia furfur (previously known as Pityrosporum ovale) as the cause of dandruff. This fungus is found naturally on the skin surface of both healthy people and those with dandruff, it has recently been shown that a scalp specific fungus, Malassezia globosa, is the responsible agent. Dandruff is due to the excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. Dandruff is not an organism like lice; it is just dead skin that accumulates in the scalp. Dandruff is a chronic condition that can almost always be controlled, but it may take a little patience and persistence. Hormones may also be involved, because dandruff usually starts after puberty and is more common in men than women. Sometimes sensitivities to certain hair-care products or hair dyes can cause a red, itchy, scaling scalp. Another skin condition that affects the scalp is called Psoriasis. Normally, dandruff, in its early stages of growth, is not visible to the naked eye. It becomes visible only after enlarging into pieces of dead skin (what we normally call “dandruff”) as a result of the propagation of bacteria and/or problems with seborrhoeic scalp conditions. It affects more than 50% of the population of the USA. It can occur at any age, but is most likely in the early 20s. Dandruff is made up of bits of dead skin that peel away from the scalp as a result of the effects of metabolism. There are several things that you can do to prevent dandruff. One easy way is to apply a mixture of 8 table spoons peanut oil and the juice of half a lemon. Avoid the use of soaps, chemical shampoos, greasy creams, other hair products containing chemicals. Avoid hair treatments like bleaching, perming, and excessive use of hair dryers. Do not pick or scratch the scalp with nails to avoid damage to the scalp tissue and secondary infection. Dandruff is infectious. Always keep your personal belongings like comb/brush, towels, pillow covers separate and absolutely clean to avoid the chances of re-infection. Avoid heavy fatty foods like cheese, redmeats, dairy products, sugars, chocolates, nuts and seafood. It can sometimes be aggravated by allergies or particular foods that stress the liver. Diet should consist of 50-70 per cent raw foods and lots of water to detoxify the system. The most effective treatment is an anti-yeast shampoo containing ketoconazole. Treatment for Dandruff Tips 1. Hair gels and other hair products can irritate the scalp in some people. 2. Do not scratch your scalp. dandruff sufferers who scratch, using an electron microscope that magnifies 400 times. 3. Avoid dyeing your hair (unless you absolutely must). 4. Massage some of the liquid onto your scalp three times a week. Do not rinse it out. 5. Make a paste with a teaspoon of dried amla powder, 1 teaspoon of dried neem leaves powder one egg and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply one hour hefore bath wash with cold water can be done twice a week. 6. Boil dried lemon peels and wash hair with this. 7. Get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids. 8. Try a tea tree oil shampoo. 9.
