Health care reform and the national debt

When the health care reform was introduced in 2010, many had questioned if the reform would be able to reduce the national debt. As per the official reports in 2010, the reform was introduced in order to reduce the budget deficit and also the national debt through savings and efficiencies. However, financial experts have doubted the betterment of the debt situation though the health care reform.

Repeal of the health care reform

However, there have been discussions on the Health Care Reform Bill being repealed if the House Republicans win. However, the main problem in that the rolling back of the law can create is the increase in the amount of the federal budget deficit. The deficit in that case can even reach to around $230 by the year 2012. This is what the Congressional Budget Office or CBO estimates. They are also of the opinion that the repeal of this law will also increase the federal deficits in the decade till 2019 by almost around 0.5% of the GDP.

So, this might be posing as one of the major problems for the Republicans, as they have the plan to reduce the deficit amount and bring back the federal spending limit to that which was there in 2008. Most of the money saved by the government is from the new tax revenue and the savings from the health reforms.

The republicans have been arguing from the beginning the reform introduced by President Obama – his signature domestic accomplishment – claiming that it is going to hamper the economic growth of the country. According to them, the people want the repeal of this law and so if they win the elections this time, if they get the power, they will be repealing the law. The Republicans also claim that this Health Care Reform is posing a problem for the job market.

However, the Republicans are also aware that the report by the CBO can play against them. Thus, they have exempted their plan to kill the law from rules which mentions that the legislation won’t be able to add to the budget deficit.

The Democrats are now banking on this decision of the Republicans and are of the opinion that the repeal of the repeal of the law will only result in increase of the deficit. Not only this, the repeal will also leave around 30 million Americans without a coverage.

So, there have been some serious arguments on the Health Care Reform. People can only wait and watch what is gluing to happen to the reform.
